Midosuji has been a popular street with residents and visitors since 1937 when it was constructed. In April 2001, Osaka launched an action plan to revitalize the street. Economic organizations, civil groups, and governmental agencies are all taking part in this initiative.

New Trends Appearing in the Midosuji District

Emergence of new visitor attractions
As part of the Midosuji cityscape enhancement program, the lower stories of new buildings are to accommodate sophisticated commercial facilities, thus adding to the relaxing, pleasant, and attractive atmosphere of the district.

Contribution of a community development group
Companies located along the Midosuji Street formed a group to promote the creation of new values for the Midosuji area, and renewed efforts to attract visitors and offer a more comfortable business environment.

Innovations led by financial institutions
Financial institutions in this district began various innovative attempts, such as opening up spaces for public communication or adding a cafe on the first floor or other types of shops to attract visitors passing through the open space along the street.

Venue to explore possibilities of urban space
An event called "Midosuji Open Festa" is conducted annually to explore the possibilities of urban space with a view toward promoting pedestrian-oriented community planning, increasing the liveliness and revitalization of the district, and facilitating the renewal of Osaka.

Yodoyabashi odona

Hommachi Garden City
In the "special urban renaissance district" where the Midosuji street and Hommachi-dori street cross, the "Hommachi Garden City" building is constructed, and is over 130 meterｓ tall, higher than the maximum building height conventionally permitted in the Midosuji District. As a new landmark of Osaka, this building accommodates an indoor public square and corridor in the lower floors, has first-class business functions to cater to the needs of the companies in the Midosuji business zone, and houses the St. Regis Osaka Hotel, renowned for its quality service, which opened in October 2010.
