Recent development

Hotarumachi
The area along the Dojima River boasts a host of waterfront amenities, the concentration of the latest information and sophisticated academic, artistic and cultural facilities, and a high-quality urban residential environment. This area opened to the public in May 2008 under the name of "Hotarumachi." To show the close association of this area with Fukuzawa Yukichi, an important historical figure and the founder of Keio University, a monument to his birthplace stands here.

Nakanoshima 3-Chome Joint Development Project
This project aims to facilitate highly efficient land use under the Comprehensive Design System and the Group Building Design System that allows exemption from the conventional one-building-on-one-site principle, and create a pleasant urban environment. This area employs a district heat supply system utilizing unused river water, and will supply heat to Kansai Electric Power Building, Daibiru East and West, and Watanabebashi Station on the Keihan Nakanoshima Line.

Nakanoshima 3-Chome Joint Development Project
Following its designation as a special urban renaissance district, the upgrading of commercial and business functions has been accelerated. In the eastern part of the district, the renewal of the Festival Hall - an international center for cultural and artistic activities-s underway. It will also house the Osaka headquarters of the Asahi Shimbun newspaper company upon completion. In the western part of the district, a super-high-rise twin-tower building will be constructed. The building will be designed to emphasize the pleasantness of the waterfront environment and utilize the latest disaster-and earthquake-proof structures, so that it will be able to serve as a disaster mitigation center for the local community. In addition, Nakanoshima underground mall will be developed so that it connects Watanabebashi Station on the Keihan Nakanoshima Line and Higobashi Station on the Osaka municipal subway line, creating a new visitor attraction.

City of Water:An island with beautiful surroundings of water and greenery, symbolic of the international city of Osaka.

Photo: Observation pointPhoto: Observation point The"Osaka: City of Water"project is designed to create a network of waterways that run through the central part of Osaka City. The Nakanoshima District is home to a number of bridges of historical importance, such as Naniwabashi Bridge, Yodoyabashi Bridge, and Suishobashi Bridge, all of which constitute valuable components of the cityscape.
Every year in December, an annual illumination festival called “OSAKA Hikari-Renaissance” is held in the Nakanoshima District, with an aim to invigorate the people of Osaka by warmly illuminating the streets and to raise the profile of Osaka as an international city. The illumination is provided in three parts of the district: the rose garden and the Kensaki square in the Nakanoshima Park in the eastern part; the area around the Central Public Hall in the central part; and the area around Nakanoshima Station on the Keihan Line and the Osaka Science Museum in the western part. Held extensively in the east-west area, this festival is now widely recognized as one of the signature winter events of Osaka.
